In the spirit of Independence Day I was thinking we should reflect on digital independence as well. Many organizations are held back by legacy decisions that once made sense, but now restrict growth and creativity. Tech debt accumulates slowly until change becomes expensive, risky, or nearly impossible. I’m working with an organization right now that has a massive, read “several months” worth of, backlog of tech debt issues we’re roadmapping.

Digital independence means creating space for evolution.

Remove constraints that no longer serve the mission

Old templates, rigid workflows, and patched components may keep things running, but they limit progress. Retiring what has outlived its usefulness is often the first step toward smoother operations.

Strength grows from flexibility

A platform that supports experimentation, fast iteration, and new ideas is one that will thrive. Independence is not freedom from rules, but freedom from unnecessary constraint.

Teams should feel enabled, not encumbered.

Progress requires deliberate investment

Debt is easy to ignore until the bill comes due. The organizations that win are the ones that prioritize modernization, even when it is inconvenient. Every improvement in tooling, structure, or process creates more freedom for future work.

Independence is not a destination. It is a posture that lets teams respond confidently to what comes next.
